Why We Care About Mission…

In follow up from Mission Possible last night at Jannali Evening Church last night here’s an excerpt from my brief sermon on Why We Care About Mission at Jannali Evening Church.

All people are evangelists at heart!!!
All people will tell you about what they’re passionate about.

Just talk to anyone for a few minutes or sneak a peak at their instagram feed — and you’ll discover what they’re into.

coffees and cafes; indie bands; lude internet based TV series; MAC or PC; an obscure approach to a healthy diet – [that’s right paleo’s you don’t escape our gaze]; their next o’seas holiday.

Talk to anyone and you’ll find out very quickly what gets them out of bed in the morning.

You’ll find out very quickly what causes they champion, what they value and esteem!

I wonder — if someone was to talk to you or to us, what would they see as our driving passion?

What cause do we champion at Jannali Evening Church?

As a church we’re passionate about Jesus… and as a result we’re passionate about his mission.

We’re passionate that all people know, honour and share Christ.

We love the gospel message, and we want to be known for it!

In the NT we read,

Luke 19:10 For the  Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.”
Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man  did not come to be served, but to serve,  and to give His life —a ransom  for many.”
1 Tim 1:15 This saying is trustworthy  and deserving of full acceptance: “Christ Jesus came into the world  to save sinners”

Jesus life, death and resurrection is all about mission.

God’s rescue mission to save us from our sins!

That’s why Jesus was born, that’s why Jesus died, and that’s what Jesus is all about!

The #1 reason we care about mission is because Jesus is all about mission.

God’s mission to forgive sinners, save souls and rescue rebels.

We pray that God’s Kingdom will be on earth as it is in heaven. We long for all people to come under the rule of Jesus.

He’s been given all authority in heaven and earth… he is the king of God’s kingdom. He is worthy of all power, glory, honour and praise.

We care about mission because Jesus is all about mission.

But another reason we care about mission is that,

We’re the result of mission…

Our gathering here is the result of mission. It’s not an accident or a coincidence. We are the result of mission and an answer to prayer.

People who witnessed the risen Jesus Christ were uniquely empowered by his Holy Spirit to be Jesus’ witnesses.

The gospel message rang out from Jerusalem, to Judea and Samaria, and has continued ringing our for generations all the way to the ends of the earth here in the sunny shire… that’s right friends, be clear on this — the Shire is not the centre of the world — no in fact we’re the ends of the earth!

As Jesus’ followers we are given to his mission… he is our Lord and master who has saved us and so it’s in our DNA.

Matt 28:18 Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  19 Go, therefore, and make disciples  of  all nations,  baptizing  them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember,  I am with you always,  to the end of the age.”

Jesus’ people are given to mission.
Jesus’ people follow him as Lord.
Jesus’ people seek to make him known in the world.

You can’t be a real follower of Jesus and not care about mission.

Jesus came to seek and save what was lost…

As I’ve heard it said once “If you don’t care about the lost then it’s probably a good sign you are lost!”

We long for the lost in Jannali, in Sydney, in Australia, in the the world, to come to know Jesus as Lord and Saviour…

We give ourselves to praying and proclaiming Jesus in order to;
build each other,
reach those around us,
and impact the nations…
