There have been some developments with the SRE program at The Jannali High School in recent years and a big change is just about to happen.
With the advent of the Department of Education’s 2015 SRE Review we began teaching the revised SRE Think Faith curriculum last year. This curriculum is now the accepted standard across secondary school SRE programs. The review was published on 23rd March 2016 and the Department’s response to the 56 recommendations made by the review was published on 11th April 2017. These documents are able to be downloaded from the DEC website.
At The Jannali High we receive strong support from the principal and school executive. All SRE classes are timetabled in the same classroom which has an attached office that is available for our SRE teachers and for storage of our resources. This is rare throughout NSW schools and is made possible because of the goodwill and support we enjoy from the school. We should give thanks for this and pray for the support we have to continue.
Our teachers, Glenn & Heather Starr have decided to retire this year. Glenn has taught in the school for the past 30 years and done an amazing job of bringing the gospel to thousands of students. Heather has taught part time over the last 10 years. Together they have worked hard to ensure that SRE is a subject that’s enjoyed by the students who attend. We celebrated Glenn’s 30 years of teaching at the SRE supper last year and presented him with a sword as a reminder of the importance of God’s Word in the ministry of SRE.
“12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” – Hebrews 4:12 (HCSB)
We will farewell them at this year’s SRE Supper which is set for Saturday 5th August at the Sutherland Uniting Church. On the same evening we plan to commission our new SRE teacher.
The SRE Board have advertised the position and conducted interviews. We are excited to reveal that we have appointed Jenn Phillips to be the new SRE teacher.
Jenn is an ex-student of the Jannali High school and has taught SRE previously at Gymea High. She is married to David and they have two boys (Max and Oliver). Jenn and David are members of the Saturday Church congregation at Jannali Anglican. Jenn has a PhD in English Literature and is also completing qualifications in both Education and Theology. When asked why she was keen to apply for the job she said, “I could spend my life teaching literature studies in universities or I could invest my life in teaching the Bible. The Bible is the living word of God. It changes lives! Deciding to apply for a role that enables me to open the Bible with students was too good to resist.”
Jenn will begin teaching part time in mid-July and then take on the full SRE load at the start of 2018. This means we will have a transition period during terms 3 and 4 which enables a smooth handover of responsibilities and time for Jenn to complete her studies.
Give thanks with us for the
– positive support we have for SRE at the Jannali High School.
– faithful teaching of Glenn & Heather Starr over 30 years.
– Appointment of Jenn Phillips to be our next SRE teacher in the school.
