Cameron Hyslop – 30 Years

Neil Fitzpatrick   -

This month marks 30 years since Cameron Hyslop joined our staff team.

Since 1991 Cameron has been leading the youth ministry of our church. I’m confident that he is by far the longest serving youth minister (in the one church) in the Sydney diocese.

Cameron’s first task after coming to Jannali was to give the Bible talks at a January camp. God was at work and some of the youth turned to Christ.

Just this month, Cameron was again the speaker at the Summer Camp, and God is still at work! At least one of our youth turned to Christ.

For Cameron, the highlights of the last 30 years have been seeing young people take steps forward in their Christian lives. He has also rejoiced in seeing over 50 people (including spouses) leave us to serve in other places.

The low lights have come when some have taken backward steps in the faith.

There have also been tough times when youth in our church have been sick or have died. Although this was challenging for everyone, Cameron has also seen how God used these times to build character and to sustain and grow his people.

Another joy for Cameron has been the gospel partnership with hundreds of youth leaders, with parents and with congregation members who have prayed for the ministry.

Cameron says he has learned to be patient in listening well to people, faithfully teaching God’s word and waiting for God to do his work in people’s lives.

In particular this verse has inspired him to persevere: Psalm 71:18

Even when I am old and grey, God, do not abandon me.
Then I will proclaim Your power to another generation,
Your strength to all who are to come.

As Senior Minister I give great thanks for Cameron and his faithful ministry.

  • His ministry has been free from scandal, consistently bringing honour to Jesus. Cameron has followed the words of Paul to Timothy to closely watch both his life and doctrine – to save both himself and his hearers.
  • He has been highly competent and creative in so many ways.
  • God has used Cameron to bring many teenagers to faith, and to grow many others to stand firm and to serve the Lord.
  • Along with youth, Cameron has also pastored parents and other adults. His wisdom and insight have been a blessing to many.

Please join me in giving thanks for Cameron and his ministry, and pray that God would continue to bless his work.
