As disciples of Jesus we are called to serve. We do this in many different ways – sometimes seen and often unseen.
This week I took out my phone to capture some pictures of some of the people in our church who serve each week in vital, but largely hidden ways.
- Peter – Each Monday morning Peter comes to the church to process and upload sermon recordings to the internet. One man’s service makes God’s word available to those not able to be in church over the weekend.
- Sid, Margaret, Tom and Greg (pictured above) + Margaret – Each week these faithful servants quietly prepare our weekly banking . Their secret service enables our church to benefit from good stewardship of our finances.
These people were not wanting or expecting to appear in this ‘spotlight’ – but it’s good for us to acknowledge them and thank God for his work in and through them.
There are of course many more who serve behind the scenes – those involved in maintenance, design, audio visual, IT, administration, catering, Monday crèche, etc.
We might call these people “volunteers” as they aren’t paid money for what they do. However, they are not really volunteers – they are compelled by the love of Christ:
14 For Christ’s love compels us, since we have reached this conclusion: If One died for all, then all died. 15 And He died for all so that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for the One who died for them and was raised. (2 Corinthians 5:14-15)
